Grade 2 Habitat Sorting Mat Activity

How to Play

• Use after the Habitat Types Worksheet and Animal Adaptations Worksheet, once students know all 6 habitats and 6 animals. Have students cut out the 6 animal cards, decide which habitat each belongs to, and glue each into the correct box on the Habitat Mat before completing the Reflection and Bonus sections.

Variations

• Before gluing, have students do a "silent sort" first — physically arrange the cut-out cards near their matching habitat photos without gluing, then walk around and check a partner's arrangement before either student commits to gluing.

Teacher Tips

Watch for students who sort by superficial visual similarity (e.g., placing the zebra with the desert camel because both photos show dry-looking land) rather than by the animal's actual habitat needs — this is a good moment to ask "what does this animal eat, and where would it find that here?"

• Students will be able to correctly sort 6 animals into their matching habitats.
• Students will be able to write one sentence connecting an animal to a real feature of its habitat.
• Students will be able to recall the four things every habitat must provide.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow the Flashcards or Vocabulary PowerPoint to stay visible while sorting, and complete the sort as a whole-class discussion before individual gluing.
ON-LEVEL: Completes the sort, Reflection, and Bonus independently.
CHALLENGE: Require the student to write a reflection sentence for TWO animals instead of one, using a different one of the four needs (food, water, shelter, space) for each.

Assessment

The animal-to-habitat placements have one fixed correct answer per animal (see the answer key). Assess the Reflection and Bonus qualitatively using the Grade 2 Habitats Unit Grading Rubric (once available).
