Grade 2 Habitat Types Worksheet

About This Resource

A one-page worksheet practicing 6 habitat types through photo identification, a matching exercise, a 6-item true/false section, and a draw-and-label challenge.

Overview

This worksheet focuses specifically on habitat CHARACTERISTICS (climate, land, and water features) rather than the animals that live there, which is covered separately in the Animal Adaptations Worksheet. Every definition in Part B was written fresh for this topic, distinct from the wording used in the existing "Grade 2 Animal Habitats Worksheet" in the Animals topic, so a teacher who owns both resources sees genuinely different content rather than a repeat.

Student Task

  • Use after the Vocabulary PowerPoint. Part A and B check recognition and description of each habitat; Part C checks whether students have internalized specific facts (not just vocabulary) about each one, including two facts that directly contradict a common misconception (deserts get rain; oceans have fresh water).

Classroom Use

  • After Part C, have students revise each FALSE statement into a TRUE one by changing just one word (e.g., "A desert gets a lot of rain" becomes "A desert gets very little rain").

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow the Vocabulary PowerPoint's Key Concept slide to stay visible during Part C, and complete Part B as a whole-class activity first.
ON-LEVEL: Completes all parts independently.
CHALLENGE: For 2 items in Part C, rewrite the false statement to make it true without changing its overall length or structure.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score Part A out of 6 (photo IDs), Part B out of 6 (matches), and Part C out of 6 (true/false) for a possible 18 points. Assess the Challenge qualitatively using the Grade 2 Habitats Unit Grading Rubric (once available).

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify and name 6 habitats from real photographs.
  • Students will be able to match each habitat to an accurate description of its climate and land/water features.
  • Students will be able to correctly judge true/false statements about specific habitat characteristics.
  • Students will be able to describe their favorite habitat and identify something found there.

Teacher Tips

Part C items 1 and 4 are the two most likely to be missed: "A desert gets a lot of rain" (False — deserts are dry) and "The ocean is full of fresh water" (False — it's salt water). Both target the same underlying skill: reading a familiar-sounding sentence carefully rather than pattern-matching on the habitat name alone.
