Grade 2 Animal Groups Flashcards
About This Resource
12 print-and-cut flashcards (2 per animal group) for quick review and games. Each card shows an animal on the question side; the matching answer side names its group and one identifying trait.
Overview
These flashcards give teachers a fast, flexible review tool for the Animals topic. The question side shows only the animal's name and picture; the answer side (printed in the same grid position, so the two pages align if printed double-sided) reveals the correct group and a one-line trait reminder. Because the cards are simple and self-contained, they work equally well as a whole-class flash-review, a small-group matching game, or an independent center activity.

How to Present
- Print both pages, cut along the dashed lines, and either: (1) hold up a question card and have the class call out the group before you reveal the matching answer card, (2) mix all 24 half-cards face-down for a memory-matching game where students pair each animal with its group, or (3) place the set in a center for independent quiz-and-check practice.
Games & Speaking Activities
- Speed round: split the class into two teams, flip through the question cards one at a time, and give a point to the first team to correctly call out the animal's group. Use the answer card to confirm immediately after each round.
Teacher Tips
For the memory-matching game, shuffle the two 12-card sets separately and only mix them together once students are comfortable — starting with the sets separated (all questions on one side of the table, all answers on the other) makes the game more approachable for students who are still building confidence with all six groups.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to name the correct animal group for each of 12 flashcard animals.
- Students will be able to state one identifying trait that justifies each animal's group.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Play with the answer sides visible as a matching (not recall) task, or use only 6 cards (one per group) at a time.
ON-LEVEL: Plays the full 12-card set from memory before checking answers.
CHALLENGE: After a correct group guess, challenge the student to name one more example animal from that same group not shown on any card in this set.
