Overview

This is the first dedicated Habitats topic produced (a single "Animal Habitats Worksheet" already exists inside the Grade 2 Animals topic, matching/sorting animals to habitats at a survey level) — this topic goes deeper into the same 6 habitats used there, for consistency across the Science catalog, while adding genuine new depth: individual habitat characteristics, and specific animal adaptations rather than just matching. The Key Concept slide establishes the same four-need framework (food, water, shelter, space) used across the site's other habitat content, then every one of the 12 vocabulary slides ties directly back to it through fact-based sentences ("Camels can survive for days without water in the hot desert").

Grade 2 45-55 Minutes Habitats Animals

Lesson Sequence

Present as a whole-class introduction before either worksheet in this topic. Read each fact sentence aloud, then ask students to name which of the four needs (food, water, shelter, space) that fact relates to. The Recap slide works well as a quick review at the start of Day 2.

Classroom Activities

After the Recap slide, do a quick round-robin: each student names one habitat and one animal that lives there, then the class checks whether that animal would actually have food, water, shelter, and space in that habitat.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to name and describe 6 habitats and 6 animals that live in them.
Students will be able to state the four things every habitat must provide (food, water, shelter, space).
Students will be able to explain, for at least one animal, how a specific trait helps it survive in its habitat.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Keep the Key Concept slide visible/printed during worksheet time.
ON-LEVEL: Proceeds through the deck as designed.
CHALLENGE: After the Quick Check slide, ask students to name a habitat NOT covered in this deck (e.g., rainforest, mountain, cave) and guess what it might provide.
