Overview

Grade 2 30-40 Minutes Animals

How to Play

Use on Day 4-5 of the Grade 2 Animals Unit Lesson Plan, immediately after the Habitats Worksheet. Groups of 2-3 sharing one shoebox/plate works well if materials are limited — the requirement is 2 animals and 2 labels, which a small group can produce together. Save 5-10 minutes at the end for a share-out; hearing six different habitats explained back-to-back doubles as a strong whole-class review of the entire topic.

Variations

Line up the finished dioramas by habitat category for a "gallery walk" before or instead of individual presentations — students circulate and try to name each habitat and one animal in it before the label cards are revealed.

Teacher Tips

Watch for students defaulting to whichever habitat is easiest to draw (e.g. everyone picking Forest) rather than the one they understand best — a quick show-of-hands on habitat choice before starting can help you nudge for variety, which also makes the share-out more interesting.

Score with the Grade 2 Animals Unit Grading Rubric (Accuracy, Reasoning, Completion, Communication — out of 12), using the rubric's dedicated Diorama Mini-Project score sheet. This project intentionally does not have a fixed-answer key, since habitat choice and animal choice are open.
