Grade 2 Animals Introduction and Vocabulary PowerPoint

About This Resource

A 12-slide introduction to the six animal groups — mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects— built for whole-class teaching. Each group gets its own slide with its key traits and real examples, plus a vocabulary recap and a discussion prompt to check understanding.

Overview

This PowerPoint opens the Grade 2 Animals topic by giving students a shared, accurate starting vocabulary before they do any independent classifying. It defines what makes something an animal, introduces the idea that scientists group animals by shared traits, walks through all six groups one at a time with concrete examples, and closes with a vocabulary recap grid and a partner-talk discussion slide.

Grade 2 40-50 Minutes Animals

Lesson Sequence

  • Project the PowerPoint for the whole class as the opening lesson of the Animals topic (pairs with the Grade 2 Animals Lesson Plan). Read each group slide aloud and ask students to name the animal in the slide's photo-free icon before revealing the examples. Pause on the "Quick Check" slide for a 1-2 minute partner-talk before moving to the Vocabulary Worksheet or Classification Sorting Worksheet.

Classroom Activities

  • After the Quick Check slide, do a quick round of "stand up if your animal fact is about a (mammal/bird/etc.)" using each student's partner-talk fact, so every group gets reinforced out loud once more before independent work.

Teacher Tips

Read the vocabulary recap slide together as a class before moving into worksheets — students who can restate a definition in their own words are far more successful sorting new, unfamiliar animals independently later in the topic.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name the six animal groups: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
  • Students will be able to state at least one identifying trait for each animal group.
  • Students will be able to give one example animal from each group.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Pause longer on each group slide and have students repeat the group name and one trait chorally before moving on; keep the vocabulary recap slide visible during later independent work.
ON-LEVEL: Follows the deck at the suggested pace, contributing one example animal per group during discussion.
CHALLENGE: Before each group's examples are revealed, ask the student to predict one additional example animal not shown on the slide.

Assessment

This is an introductory resource and is not scored. Use informal observation during the partner-talk (Quick Check slide) to note which students can already name a trait and an example unprompted, and which will need extra support during the Classification Sorting Worksheet.
