Grade 2 Parts of a Plant Labeling Worksheet

About This Resource

A two-page worksheet where Grade 2 students label a diagram of a plant, then practice the same vocabulary through fill-in-the-blank sentences and a circle-the-correct-word activity. Written for classrooms where many students are still building their English vocabulary.

Overview

This worksheet gives students three different ways to practice the same four words — roots, stem, leaf, and flower — so the vocabulary has a chance to stick. Page one asks students to look at a diagram of a whole plant and write the correct word next to each of four numbered callouts, using a word bank. Page two moves from picture to sentence: four fill-in-the-blank sentences describe what each part does, followed by three circle-the-correct-word sentences that ask students to choose between two plant words. A bonus prompt invites students to write one sentence of their own about their favorite plant part.

Student Task

  • Use this worksheet as independent or paired practice after teaching the Vocabulary PowerPoint and Lesson Plan. Students can complete the diagram on page one first, then move to page two once the word bank is familiar. The bonus question at the end works well as an early-finisher task while other students continue working.

Classroom Use

  • Plant Charades: in small groups, one student silently acts out a plant part (for example, standing tall and still for "stem," or crouching low and wiggling fingers for "roots") while the rest of the group guesses the word.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a word bank with a small picture next to each word for page one; for page two, allow students to point to the word bank card rather than writing, or trace a lightly pre-printed word.
ON-LEVEL: Complete both pages independently using the word bank provided.
CHALLENGE: Complete both pages without looking at the word bank, then write two additional sentences describing what would happen to the plant if one part (for example, the roots) was missing.

Answer Key & Assessment

Completed worksheet checked against the answer key; teacher observation of whether students can name each part confidently during the diagram activity.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify roots, stem, leaf, and flower on a diagram of a plant.
  • Students will be able to complete sentences describing what each plant part does.
  • Students will be able to choose the correct plant vocabulary word to complete a sentence.
  • Students will be able to write one original sentence using plant vocabulary.

Teacher Tips

Before students start page two, cover the word bank and ask the class to recall all four words from memory first — it turns a quiet warm-up moment into a quick, low-pressure vocabulary check before the writing begins.
