Grade 2 What Plants Need to Grow Reading Activity
About This Resource
A short reading passage, "A School Garden," about two students caring for a school garden, followed by a nine-question comprehension activity covering true or false, multiple choice, and short answer. Set in a rainy-season and hot-season Southeast Asian context.
Overview
The passage follows Mai and Arun as they care for their school garden, introducing what plants need to grow — sunlight, water, and soil — through simple dialogue and everyday classroom actions rather than a list of facts. The story references the rainy and hot seasons rather than a four-season climate, keeping it relevant to a Southeast Asian classroom. The comprehension section that follows has three parts: four true-or-false statements checking basic recall, three multiple-choice questions checking understanding of cause and detail, and two short-answer questions that ask students to summarize and reflect using their own words.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to read and understand a short original story about plant care.
- Students will be able to identify true and false statements based on a text.
- Students will be able to answer multiple-choice questions about specific details in a text.
- Students will be able to answer short comprehension questions in complete sentences.
How to Use This Resource
- Read the passage aloud as a class first, pausing to check understanding of new vocabulary (patience, nutrients, sprouts). Students can then reread the passage independently or with a partner before answering the questions, or answer as a guided whole-class activity for classes that need more support. Part C works well as a short discussion before students write their answers.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Garden Diary: after finishing the questions, have students write or draw one entry for "Day 22" of Mai and Arun's garden, imagining what the plants look like right after the sprouts described in the story appear.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Read the passage aloud more than once, and allow students to underline the sentence in the text that answers each true-or-false and multiple-choice question before circling their answer.
ON-LEVEL: Complete all three parts independently after one read-aloud.
CHALLENGE: For question 9, write two additional sentences describing what Mai and Arun might do next to take care of their new sprouts.
Assessment
Completed comprehension questions checked against the answer key; teacher observation of participation during the read-aloud and class discussion.
Teacher Tips
Before reading, ask students to predict what Mai and Arun's garden might need by looking only at the title and the picture — this builds anticipation and gives students a reason to listen closely for confirmation as the story is read.
