Grade 2 Parts of a Plant Vocabulary PowerPoint

About This Resource

An 11-slide teaching PowerPoint that introduces Grade 2 students to the four main parts of a plant — roots, stem, leaves, and flower — with simple definitions, example sentences, a labeled diagram, and a quick oral check for understanding. Built for classrooms with English language learners.

Overview

This PowerPoint is designed to be taught alongside the Lesson Plan and before the Labeling Worksheet. It opens with the lesson's learning objectives, introduces the key vocabulary as a short reference list, then gives each plant part its own slide with a simple picture, a two-sentence description, and a spoken example sentence for choral practice. A labeled diagram slide brings all four parts together, a "Point and Say" slide gives students a quick oral check for understanding, and the deck closes with instructions for the Labeling Worksheet activity and a one-slide review.

Lesson Sequence

  • Project the PowerPoint during the Direct Instruction and Guided Practice segments of the Lesson Plan. Read each part's description aloud, then say the example sentence together as a class before moving to the next slide. Use the "Point and Say" slide as a quick whole-class check, calling on individual students to name a part, before moving into the Labeling Worksheet.

Classroom Activities

  • Simon Says, Plant Style: call out "Simon says touch your roots (feet), your stem (legs), your leaves (arms), or your flower (head)" and have students touch the matching body part — a quick, active way to reinforce the four words before moving to independent work.

Teacher Tips

Pause on the vocabulary slide and have students echo each word twice before moving on — a short chorus of repetition here makes the individual part slides go much faster, since the words are already familiar.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name the four main parts of a plant: roots, stem, leaves, and flower.
  • Students will be able to describe what each part of a plant does.
  • Students will be able to say and use plant words in simple sentences.
  • Students will be able to look at a diagram and point to each part of a plant.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Keep the vocabulary slide visible throughout the lesson as a reference; allow students to answer the "Point and Say" check by pointing rather than speaking if needed.
ON-LEVEL: Say the example sentence for each part independently after seeing the picture.
CHALLENGE: After each part slide, ask the student to add one more detail in their own words (for example, "The flower is also where bees land.").

Assessment

Teacher observation during the "Point and Say" slide and during choral repetition of example sentences; listen for whether students can independently name each part when the picture is shown without the word.
