Grade 2 Plant Life Cycle Sequencing Worksheet

About This Resource

A two-page worksheet where Grade 2 students put the five stages of a plant's life cycle in the correct order, answer two short thinking questions, then draw and label the cycle themselves. A hands-on way to build sequencing skills alongside plant vocabulary.

Overview

Page one shows five pictures of a plant's life cycle — a seed, a sprout, a young plant, a flowering plant, and a plant with a seed-bearing fruit — mixed out of order and marked with letters instead of numbers. Students study the pictures and write the letters in the correct 1st-to-5th order in a small table, then answer two short "Think About It" questions that check their understanding of what a seed needs to grow. Page two asks students to draw the four main stages of the life cycle themselves, in order, and label each drawing — moving from recognizing the sequence to reproducing it independently.

Student Task

  • Teach or review the life cycle stages first (the Vocabulary PowerPoint and Lesson Plan both touch on this briefly, or use a simple retelling with picture cards). Have students complete page one independently or in pairs, encouraging them to describe each picture in their own words before deciding on the order. Page two works well as a follow-up on a separate day, once the sequence is familiar, as a chance to demonstrate understanding through drawing.

Classroom Use

  • Life Cycle Line-Up: give five students each a large picture card of one stage and have the rest of the class direct them to stand in the correct order at the front of the room, then read the sequence aloud together as a class.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a simple word list (seed, sprout, young plant, flower, fruit) next to the drawing boxes on page two, and allow students to use the picture cards from page one as a physical reference when ordering.
ON-LEVEL: Complete both pages independently, including the two short-answer questions.
CHALLENGE: After ordering the pictures, write one sentence explaining what happens between two of the stages (for example, between the sprout and the young plant).

Answer Key & Assessment

Completed worksheet checked against the answer key; teacher observation of students' drawings on page two for whether the stages are shown in a logical, recognizable order.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify the five stages of a plant's life cycle from pictures.
  • Students will be able to place the stages of a plant's life cycle in the correct order.
  • Students will be able to answer simple questions about what a seed needs to grow.
  • Students will be able to draw and label the main stages of a plant's life cycle.

Teacher Tips

Before handing out the worksheet, act out the life cycle as a class with simple movements (curl up small for a seed, slowly stand for a sprout, stretch arms out for a flower) — students who have moved through the sequence with their bodies find it much easier to sequence on paper afterward.
