Grade 2 Plants and How They Grow Lesson Plan

About This Resource

A complete 40–45 minute lesson plan introducing Grade 2 students to the main parts of a plant and what plants need to grow. Designed for classrooms where many students are still building their English, with simple sentence models, choral repetition, and a hands-on labeling activity.

Overview

This lesson plan walks a teacher through a full first lesson on plants: a warm-up built around a real plant or picture, direct instruction introducing roots, stem, leaf, and flower using the Vocabulary PowerPoint, a guided practice segment where the class labels a diagram together, independent practice with the Labeling Worksheet, and a closing routine that checks whether students can name what a plant needs to grow. Timing is suggested for each segment, and the plan can be taught in one lesson or split across two shorter periods if needed.

Grade 2 40-45 Minutes Lesson Plan

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name the four main parts of a plant: roots, stem, leaves, and flower.
  • Students will be able to explain that plants need sunlight, water, and soil to grow.
  • Students will be able to describe, in order, the basic life cycle of a plant from seed to new seed.
  • Students will be able to use plant vocabulary in simple spoken and written sentences.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read through the lesson sequence before class and gather materials, ideally including a real potted plant, a seedling, or clear photographs of a plant growing locally (a school garden, a rice field, or a fruit tree are all good choices). Teach the five segments in order: warm-up, direct instruction, guided practice, independent practice, and closure. The Vocabulary PowerPoint and Labeling Worksheet referenced in the plan are separate resources in this collection and should be prepared in advance.

Assessment

Teacher observation during guided practice (can students point to and name each part correctly), review of the completed Labeling Worksheet, and listening for correct vocabulary use during the closing discussion.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Provide a word bank with a small picture next to each word, allow students to point to and copy words rather than write from memory, and pair students with a partner who can help translate a difficult word.
ON-LEVEL: Complete the Labeling Worksheet independently and write one full sentence describing a plant part.
CHALLENGE: Label the diagram, then write two sentences describing what two different parts do, and look closely at a real plant to try to find its roots, stem, and leaves.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Plant Detective: after the lesson, ask students to look for one real plant at home or on the way to school and, the next day, tell a partner one part of it they could see (for example, "I saw the leaves. They were green and big.").

Teacher Tips

If a real plant is not available on the day of the lesson, a short walk around the school grounds beforehand to point out one growing plant works just as well as an in-class example, and gives the vocabulary an immediate, real reference point.
