Grade 3 States of Matter Quiz

About This Resource

A 12-question, 15-point quiz covering solids, liquids, and gases and the four changes of state, mixing multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions. Designed as an end-of-topic check after the lesson plan, PowerPoint, worksheet, reading activity, and observation task have all been completed.

Overview

The quiz opens with five multiple choice questions covering identification and properties of the three states and the vocabulary for changes of state. Part B is a five-item fill-in-the-blank section using a word bank, checking that students can apply the vocabulary rather than just recognise it. Part C closes with two short answer questions that ask students to explain a concept in their own words and connect it to a real example from their own life, giving a fuller picture of understanding than multiple choice alone.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use this quiz after completing the full States of Matter collection — lesson plan, PowerPoint, worksheet, reading activity, and observation task — as a summative check of the topic. Allow about 20 minutes. Part A and B can be marked quickly against the answer key; Part C should be marked using the sample answers as a guide to the kind of explanation expected, since students may phrase correct answers differently.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • After returning marked quizzes, run a quick "fix it together" round: read out one commonly missed question, and have students explain to a partner why the correct answer is correct before moving on.

Differentiation

Support: Allow access to a word bank card during Part C, reduce Part C to one question instead of two, or allow verbal responses for Part C recorded by the teacher or a classroom aide.
On-level: Students complete all three parts independently within the standard time.
Challenge: Ask students to add a second real-life example to question 12 and explain how it is similar to or different from their first example.

Assessment

This quiz is itself a summative assessment tool for the States of Matter topic. Use the included answer key to mark Parts A and B exactly, and the sample answers as a guide for evaluating the short answer responses in Part C.

Teacher Tips

Read Part C's two questions aloud before students begin the quiz so that students who read more slowly know what depth of answer to aim for from the start, rather than running out of time on the last section.
