Overview

Students begin by sorting ten illustrated items — from an ice cube and a stone to steam and cooking oil — into solid, liquid, or gas. Part B asks them to match five property sentences (such as "spreads out to completely fill its container") to the one correct state, which checks understanding more precisely than a simple sorting task alone. Part C has students generate their own example for each state using a sentence frame, and Part D closes with a draw-and-label task where students illustrate a real solid, liquid, and gas they noticed that day and explain their choice in a sentence. An extra challenge question stretches students who finish early.

Student Task

Hand this out after the Vocabulary and Concepts PowerPoint and the demonstration in the Lesson Plan. Complete question 1 of Part A together as a class to model the thinking, then let students continue independently or in pairs. Circulate during Part B, since the property-matching table is the most conceptually demanding section. Part D works well as a five-minute drawing task to close the lesson or as homework if time is short.

Classroom Use

Turn Part A into a silent classroom sort: place the ten item cards (or drawings) around the room and have students walk in pairs to place a matching S, L, or G sticky note next to each one, then review together as a class.

Differentiation

Support: Reduce Part A to the first six items, provide a picture word bank with the words solid, liquid, and gas next to their icons, and allow verbal answers for Part C instead of full sentences.
On-level: Students complete all four parts independently as written.
Challenge: Ask students to complete the Extra Challenge question in full sentences and add a second example of their own to each column in Part A.
