Grade 3 40-55 Minutes State of Matter Vocabulary

Lesson Sequence

Project the presentation during the direct-instruction portion of the lesson (Steps 2–3 of the Lesson Plan). Pause on the Quick Check slide (slide 8) to let students discuss with a partner before revealing your own explanation verbally. Use the two "Changes of State" slides side by side with a real demonstration if possible. Close with the Review slide and give students a moment to answer the exit question in their notebooks before moving to the worksheet.

Classroom Activities

Use the "Try It Yourself" slide (slide 12) as a short paired scavenger hunt: give students two minutes to find and point to a real solid, liquid, and gas somewhere in the classroom before discussing as a class.

Teacher Tips

Slides 9 and 10 use an arrow-flow layout (ice → water → steam, and back again) that works well as a quick visual for students to sketch into their notebooks as a personal reference before starting the worksheet.

Challenge: Ask these students to generate their own additional example for each state or change of state before you reveal the slide's own examples.

Assessment

Use the Quick Check slide (slide 8) as an informal, verbal formative check, and the exit question on the final slide as a quick written check of understanding to collect before the next lesson.
