Grade 5 Ecosystems and Habitats Vocabulary and Concepts PowerPoint
About This Resource
A 17-slide PowerPoint that introduces Grade 5 students to ecosystems and habitats: key vocabulary, biotic and abiotic factors, producers, consumers, decomposers, food chains and food webs, adaptation, and human impact. Examples are drawn from across Southeast Asia, including tropical rainforest, coral reef, mangrove wetland, and rice-field habitats. It's for Science teachers who want a visual, ready-to-teach introduction to the topic, designed to pair with the Lesson Plan in this collection.
Overview
Each new term gets its own slide with a plain-language definition, everyday examples, and simple supporting icons, which helps English language learners follow along even when the vocabulary is new. A dedicated slide compares Southeast Asian habitats side by side, a diagram slide walks through a full rice-field food chain step by step, and a review slide closes the deck with four discussion questions teachers can use as a quick check for understanding.

Lesson Sequence
- Project the PowerPoint during direct instruction, following the sequence suggested in the Lesson Plan (slides 1-9 for Lesson 1, the habitats and food chain slides for Lesson 2, and the remaining slides for Lesson 3). Pause after each new vocabulary slide and ask students for their own example before moving on. The review slide at the end works well as a whole-class discussion or as an exit-ticket prompt students answer in their notebooks.
Classroom Activities
- Pause on the Food Chain slide and cover the last organism (the snake) with your hand. Ask students to predict what would happen to the frog population if snakes were removed from the chain entirely, then reveal the full picture on the Food Webs slide that follows.
Teacher Tips
Before clicking to the "Habitats Around Southeast Asia" slide, ask students to guess which of the four habitats they think has the most living things in it. It creates a reason to keep watching rather than just reading, and it's a natural bridge into the food chain and food web slides that follow.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to define ecosystem, habitat, biotic factor, and abiotic factor.
- Students will be able to describe the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers.
- Students will be able to explain how a food chain and a food web work.
- Students will be able to give an example of adaptation and of human impact on a habitat.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Read each definition slide aloud and point to the icon while naming it. Allow students to answer discussion questions with a single word or a drawing.
ON-LEVEL: Students follow the deck as designed, answering in full sentences when discussing each concept.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to suggest one additional organism for the rice-field food chain and explain where it would fit and why.
Assessment
Use the Quick Review slide as an oral or written check for understanding, or observe student answers during the paused "your own example" moments throughout the deck.
