Grade 6 Simple Machines and Forces Grading Rubric

About This Resource

A four-level grading rubric for assessing Grade 6 student understanding of forces and simple machines, covering identifying the six simple machines, explaining forces, investigation skills, using key vocabulary, and effort and participation. Designed to be used across the whole topic rather than for a single worksheet.

Overview

This rubric gives teachers a consistent, criteria-based way to assess student understanding once students have worked through some or all of the resources in this collection — the worksheets, the PowerPoint, the investigation, and the quiz. It sets out five criteria — identifying simple machines, explaining forces, investigation skills, using key vocabulary, and effort and participation — each described across four performance levels, from Needs Support through to Exceeds Expectations. A short interpretation guide explains what each level represents, and a suggested-use note recommends applying the rubric as a topic-level summary rather than for one piece of work.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use this rubric after students have completed a meaningful sample of work from this topic — for example, the Six Simple Machines Classification Worksheet, the Force and Friction Investigation Activity, and the Simple Machines and Forces Quiz. For each of the five criteria, read across the row and choose the description that best matches the student's typical performance, rather than judging from a single question or answer. Because this is a teacher assessment tool rather than a student worksheet, it does not include student-facing instructions or an answer key.

Teacher Tips

If you plan to share expectations with students ahead of time, rewrite the "Meets Expectations" column in simpler, first-person language ("I can name the six simple machines" or "I can explain what friction does") and post it alongside your working wall during the topic.
