Grade 6 Simple Machines and Forces Quiz
About This Resource
A 24-point summative quiz covering force, friction, gravity, and the six simple machines, using four question types — multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and picture identification. Includes a built-in score summary table for quick grading.
Overview
This quiz checks understanding across the whole topic rather than a single lesson. Part A uses five multiple choice questions, including one scenario-based question about friction on different surfaces. Part B is a five-item fill-in-the-blank section using the topic's core vocabulary. Part C asks two short-answer questions that require students to apply and explain ideas rather than simply recall them, including one question connecting simple machines to a bicycle. Part D shows four original line-drawing diagrams of simple machines for students to identify by name. A score summary table at the end makes grading and recording results quick for the teacher.

Simple Machines and Forces — Complete Topic Bundle — ฿99 one-timeLearning Objectives
- Students will be able to define force, gravity, friction, load, and simple machine.
- Students will be able to identify a simple machine from a real-life scenario or a diagram.
- Students will be able to explain how friction affects the effort needed to move an object.
- Students will be able to name simple machines used in a familiar object, such as a bicycle.
- Students will be able to explain, in their own words, how a screw relates to an inclined plane.
How to Use This Resource
- Give this quiz once both lessons in the Lesson Plan, the Classification Worksheet, and the Investigation Activity have been completed, as a short individual summative check — it should take most students about 20-25 minutes. Read the instructions aloud before starting, and consider reading each multiple choice question aloud once for classes with a wide range of reading levels. Use the score summary table to record part-by-part results, which can also feed into the Grading Rubric in this collection.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Quiz Corners: before the real quiz, put four picture cards (one per simple machine from Part D) in the corners of the room and call out a definition; students walk to the corner they think matches, then discuss any disagreements as a class.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Read questions aloud, allow use of a printed vocabulary word bank throughout the quiz (not only in Part B), and reduce Part C to one required question instead of two.
ON-LEVEL: Complete all four parts independently within the suggested time.
CHALLENGE: For Part C question 1, name a third simple machine found on a bicycle beyond the two required, and explain its job as well.
Assessment
The quiz itself is the assessment. Use the included score summary table and the Grading Rubric in this collection to record and interpret results.
Teacher Tips
Part D can also be used on its own as a fast two-minute review at the start of any lesson in this topic — simply cover the score summary and short-answer sections and use only the picture page.
