Grade 6 50-60 Minutes Vocabulary Simple Machines and Forces

Lesson Sequence

Teach the slides in order across one lesson, or split across two shorter periods (vocabulary and forces in the first period, the six machines in the second). Pause after each concept slide to ask students for another local example of that machine before moving on. Use the "Spot the Machine" slide as a quick whole-class check, with students calling out the name of each machine. The final slides connect directly to the Six Simple Machines Classification Worksheet in this collection, so have it ready before the "Your Turn" slide.

Classroom Activities

Machine Hunt: after the presentation, give students five minutes to look around the classroom or school building and list any simple machines they can find (a door hinge, a pencil sharpener handle, a flagpole pulley, a ramp). Compare lists as a class and discuss which simple machine was found most often.

Teacher Tips

Before teaching the lever, pulley, and wheel and axle slides, bring in (or show a photo of) one real object from your own school or town that uses that machine — a well winch, a wheelbarrow, or a bicycle work well almost anywhere in the region — so the diagram is immediately connected to something students already know.
