Grade 6 Simple Machines Reading Comprehension Activity
About This Resource
A two-page reading passage about a family's busy market day, where Grade 6 students meet a ramp, a pulley, two wedges, and a wheel and axle in a real-life setting, then answer multiple choice, true or false, short answer, and vocabulary-in-context questions.
Overview
The passage follows Kanya as she helps her grandmother load fruit onto a truck using a ramp, prepares fruit at the market stall using a knife and a cleaver, and watches her father use a rope and wheel to lift a fishing boat engine, before her grandmother uses a hand pump to bring up water. Every simple machine is shown doing real work in a setting familiar to students across the region, rather than in an abstract example. The questions that follow move from basic comprehension (multiple choice, true or false) to text-based reasoning (short answer, with one question asking students to find supporting text) to vocabulary in context, finishing with an inference question that connects the story back to the big idea of the topic.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify simple machines described within a reading passage.
- Students will be able to answer literal comprehension questions about a text (multiple choice and true or false).
- Students will be able to locate and quote text evidence to support an answer.
- Students will be able to use context clues to match topic vocabulary to its meaning.
- Students will be able to explain, using an example from the text, why people use simple machines.
How to Use This Resource
- This works well as homework after the Vocabulary and Concepts PowerPoint and the Classification Worksheet, or as an in-class reading lesson later in the week. Consider reading the passage aloud once as a class before students answer independently, especially for classes with a wide range of reading levels. Part A to C can be checked together using the answer key; Part D and the inference question are good material for a short partner discussion before students write their final answers.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Story Swap: after completing the questions, ask students to rewrite one paragraph of the passage using a different simple machine and setting of their choice (for example, a different family job or a different Southeast Asian setting), keeping the same sentence patterns.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Read the passage aloud with the class before independent work, allow students to underline the sentence that answers each short-answer question directly in the passage rather than rewriting it, and provide the vocabulary word bank definitions in a simplified form if needed.
ON-LEVEL: Read the passage independently and complete all four parts, writing short-answer responses in full sentences.
CHALLENGE: Complete the inference question in detail, using more than one example from the passage, and identify one simple machine used in the story that was not directly named.
Assessment
Completed comprehension questions, and listening for correct use of vocabulary during class discussion of the inference question.
Teacher Tips
Before assigning Part C question 1, model how to "find and quote" a sentence using a different example from the passage, since searching for supporting text is a skill many students are still developing in Grade 6, especially in a second language.
