Hop Along: Fractions on a Number Line

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 math lesson pack on fractions on a number line: dividing the space from 0 to 1 into equal parts, naming the marks as fractions, placing fractions, seeing that 2/2, 3/3 and 4/4 equal 1, comparing fractions with the same denominator and spotting equivalent fractions on number lines. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that a fraction is a number with its own place on the number line. They divide the space from 0 to 1 into equal parts, count the jumps from 0 to name each mark (one quarter, two quarters, three quarters), place fractions on lines, discover that a whole such as 4/4 lands on 1, compare fractions with the same denominator by seeing which is farther from 0, and line up two number lines to find equivalent fractions such as 1/2 and 2/4.

Grade 3 (ages 8–9) 55 minutes Fractions number lines equal parts comparing reasoning

Learning Objectives

  • Represent fractions on a number line from 0 to 1 by dividing it into equal parts.
  • Name the fraction at a mark by counting equal jumps from 0.
  • Compare fractions and find simple equivalent fractions using number lines.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and fold a paper strip into equal parts to make a number line.
  • Use the flashcards to review key words, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human number line: put 0 and 1 on the floor with tape; students holding fraction cards (quarters) stand in the right place.
  • Paper strip folding: fold strips into halves, quarters and eighths and mark them to make matching number lines.
  • Frog hops: a toy frog hops along a number line in eighths; students say the fraction after each hop.

Differentiation

Support: use halves and quarters with paper strips. Challenge: place fractions greater than 1 on a number line from 0 to 2, such as 5/4.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check naming, placing and comparing fractions on number lines (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations.

Teacher Tips

Count the jumps (spaces), not the tick marks. Students often count the 0 mark and get the wrong denominator. Ask "How many equal spaces are between 0 and 1?"
