About This Resource

A flexible, hands-on drawing activity with six unlabeled circles for students to draw and name the people who take care of them, plus a word bank with room to write their own words. No two students need to fill it in the same way.

Overview

This is the unit's most personal resource, and it was designed with that carefully in mind. Rather than pre-labeling slots "mother" and "father," every circle is left blank and generic, so a student can draw and write whoever fits their own life — a real family member, someone they choose, or a made-up family — and it is explicitly fine to leave a circle empty. A word bank at the bottom offers the unit's vocabulary plus an "other: ___" option for any word not listed. There is no answer key, because this activity has no single correct answer by design.

How to Play

Before starting, remind the class that families look different and that any answer is welcome.
Let students draw and label up to six people in the circles, using the word bank or their own words.
Circulate quietly and offer the fictional-family option to any student who seems unsure or uncomfortable.
Optionally, let students who want to share do so in pairs or small groups rather than in front of the whole class.

Variations

Once finished, invite (never require) a few students to share one circle with a partner using the sentence "This is my ___," giving Resource 4's speaking pattern a natural, low-pressure encore.

Students will be able to identify and label people who are important in their life using family vocabulary.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to draw only and skip the writing, or trace a pre-written word from the word bank.
Extension: ask students to add a short sentence under one circle describing that person.
