My Family — Writing Activity

About This Resource

A guided writing activity where students finish sentence frames using family vocabulary and possessives, then draw and write about a family of their choosing in an open-ended final section.

Overview

This is the unit's dedicated writing resource, distinct from the grammar worksheet's example-based practice and the speaking activity's oral production. Part 1 uses a picture word bank to scaffold four sentence frames practicing "This is my ___," "Her name is ___," "His name is ___," and "I have a ___." Part 2 gives students a drawing box and a line to independently draw and describe a family — explicitly framed so students may write about their own family, a family member they choose, or a make-believe family. No answer key is included, since both parts invite personal, open-ended responses.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to write simple, complete sentences about family members using my, his, and her correctly.
Students will be able to describe a family member in a short written sentence.
Students will be able to draw and label a family of their own choosing.

How to Use This Resource

Review the word bank together and make sure students can read all eight words.
Remind students before Part 1 that they may write about anyone they choose.
Have students complete the four sentence frames in Part 1 independently or with light support.
For Part 2, have students draw and write about a family in the box and on the lines provided.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Once finished, let a few volunteers share their Part 2 drawing and sentence with the class as a short "show and tell," making clear that sharing is optional and any kind of family is welcome.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to copy a sentence frame directly from the word bank, or accept a single word plus a drawing in Part 2.
Extension: ask students to write a second, original sentence describing what that family member likes to do.

Assessment

Review completed sentences for correct use of my/his/her and the modeled sentence frames; this is a formative writing check rather than a scored quiz.

Teacher Tips

Encourage students to say their sentence out loud before writing it — rehearsing the sentence orally first reduces spelling and word-order errors for emerging writers, especially with his/her.
