Unit 1 Teacher's Guide — Personal Identity & Communication

About This Resource

A reference document covering a resource-by-resource guide, common student grammar errors and fixes, guidance on handling personal/family information sensitively, pacing options, and an answer-key location summary.

Overview

This guide complements the Lesson Plan (Resource 11) with background reference material rather than a minute-by-minute schedule: a quick-reference table of all twelve resources with format and teaching notes, five of the most common grammar errors Grade 6 students make in this unit with specific fixes, four practical notes on discussing personal and family information sensitively, three pacing options for different schedules, three extension ideas for advanced classes, and a table showing exactly where every answer key lives.

Grade 6 45-55 Minutes Teacher's Guide Personal Identity & Communication

Learning Objectives

  • Identify which of the twelve unit resources to use for a given teaching need using the resource-by-resource table.
  • Recognize and correctly address at least three of the five most common Grade 6 grammar errors specific to this unit's content.
  • Apply at least two of the four sensitivity guidelines when facilitating personal-information sharing activities.

How to Use This Resource

  • Read once before teaching the unit for the first time, then keep as a reference throughout — particularly the Common Student Errors section during grading, and the Teaching Sensitively section before Lesson 4 (the Speaking Activity), where students share the most personal information.

Differentiation

Support: The guide's sensitivity notes directly support Support-tier accommodations by explaining why flexible, non-mandatory sharing of personal details benefits all students, not only those with sensitive circumstances.
On-Level: The resource-by-resource table and common-errors section apply directly to standard delivery of the unit as sequenced in the Lesson Plan.
Challenge: The Extension Ideas section provides three ready-to-use activities specifically for fast finishers and advanced classes.

Teacher Tips

Read the "Common Student Errors" section before grading the Quiz (Resource 10) rather than after — several of the listed errors (especially possessive adjective/pronoun confusion and wh- question word order) are far easier to categorize consistently across a stack of papers when you already have the pattern in mind.
