What Is This? — Speaking Activity

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to ask and answer "What is this? / It is a ___." with a partner.
• Students will be able to ask and answer "Where is the ___? / It is on/in/under the ___."
• Students will be able to describe the location of a real object using a preposition.

How to Use This Resource

• Model Part 1's dialogue with a student volunteer before pairs practice it themselves.
• Have partners take turns with Part 2, pointing at the picture row and asking/answering "What is this?"
• Send pairs on the Part 3 classroom search, asking "Where is the ___?" for each of the five listed objects.
• Bring the class back together and have a few pairs share what they found.

Classroom Activity Ideas

• Play a whole-class version of Part 3 as "Twenty Questions, Classroom Edition": think of one object in the room, and let students ask "Is it on the desk? Is it in the bag?" until someone guesses correctly.

Differentiation

Support: let students answer Part 3 with a single preposition word rather than a full sentence, and pair them with a stronger speaking partner. Extension: ask capable students to add a second detail, such as "It is on the desk, next to the book."

Assessment

Circulate during Part 2 and Part 3 and note which students can produce both question patterns unprompted versus those who need the sentence starter modeled — this is a speaking check, not a scored assignment.

Teacher Tips

Walk the room during Part 3 and listen in rather than only checking written answers afterward — hearing the question-and-answer exchange live tells you far more about oral fluency than the written location alone.
