Student Task

  • Collect a few things from children (a pencil, a hat). Hold one up: "This is Mia's pencil." Write it and circle the 's.
  • Teach the question "Whose is this?", then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Children complete activities 3 to 6; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Lost and found: put children's items in a box; a child takes one and asks "Whose is this?" and the class answers.
  • Family pets: children draw a pet for a family member and write "This is Grandma's cat."
  • Name tag hunt: put name cards on desks; children walk around and say "This is Leo's desk."

Differentiation

Support: use children's own names and real objects, and give the sentence frame "This is ____'s ____." Challenge: write sentences about animals and family members, such as "The bird's nest is in the tree."

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 5 check reading and writing the possessive 's (answer key included). Listen to each child answer "Whose is this?" in the lost-and-found game.

Learning Objectives

  • Use 's to show who something belongs to (Ana's bag).
  • Ask and answer "Whose is this?" with "It's …'s."

Teacher Tips

Show the apostrophe as a small flying comma. Point out that the 's goes right after the owner, not after the thing: Tom's hat, not Tom hat's.
