ABC Order Activity

How to Play

• Have students complete Part 1 by saying the alphabet aloud and filling in each missing letter.
• For Part 2, have students cut apart the letter tiles, mix them up, and then physically reorder and glue or tape them onto a strip of paper (or simply lay them out on a desk if glue isn't available).
• For Part 3, have students start at the circled dot (A) and draw a line letter by letter, in order, all the way to Z.
• Ask what shape appeared once the dots are connected, as a fun wrap-up.

Variations

• Turn Part 2 into a small-group race: give each pair or small group their own scrambled tile set and see who can lay the full alphabet back out in order first, then check together as a class.

Teacher Tips

Rotate this activity in every two to three weeks across the unit as a hands-on change of pace, rather than saving it only for the very end — sequencing practice benefits from being revisited periodically as more letters are introduced.

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to recite and reconstruct the alphabet in correct A-to-Z order, independent of any single letter's sound.

Differentiation

Support: for Part 2, use only the first half of the alphabet (A-M) as a shorter reordering task.

Extension: time how quickly a student can reorder the full tile set, and challenge them to beat their own time on a later attempt.
