Cat, Hat, Bat! Rhyming Words

About This Resource

A free Grade 1 ESL phonics worksheet pack on rhyming words: hearing words that rhyme, matching rhyming pictures, finding the word that does not rhyme, word families such as -at, -og and -un, and finishing a rhyme. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Children learn that rhyming words end with the same sound, like cat, hat and bat. They listen for rhymes, match rhyming pictures, spot the odd one out, build words in the -at, -og, -un and -ake families, and finish short rhymes. Rhyming builds the listening skills children need for reading and spelling.

Student Task

  • Read a short rhyming book or nursery rhyme and ask children to clap when they hear words that rhyme.
  • Say each picture name aloud and do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Children complete activities 3 to 5; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Rhyme or not? Say two words; children give a thumbs up if they rhyme and a thumbs down if they do not.
  • Word family house: write -at on a house and children add letters to the door to make cat, hat, mat and bat.
  • Rhyme hunt: children find two things in the classroom that rhyme (a book and a hook).

Differentiation

Support: focus on the -at and -og families with picture cards. Challenge: children write their own two-line rhyme.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 4 check rhyming and word families (answer key included). Listen to each child say a pair of rhyming words.

Learning Objectives

  • Hear and say pairs of words that rhyme.
  • Find the word that does not rhyme in a group.
  • Make new words in a word family such as -at or -og.

Teacher Tips

Say the words slowly and stretch the ending: c-at, h-at. Rhyming is about sounds, so always say the words aloud rather than only reading them.
