My ABC Page — Writing Activity

About This Resource

A one-page writing activity where students finish four guided sentences using picture vocabulary, then design and write about their own original "ABC page" for a letter of their choosing.

Overview

This is the unit's dedicated writing resource. Part 1 uses a picture word bank to scaffold four fill-in-the-blank sentences built from familiar unit vocabulary (apple, dog, hat, tree, and others). Part 2 is open-ended: students pick their own favorite letter, draw a picture that starts with it in a provided box, and complete a "___ is for ___" sentence plus one additional descriptive sentence about their chosen letter and picture — modeled directly on the format used throughout the unit's reading passage and flashcards.

Grade 1 35-45 Minutes Writing Reading

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to write simple, complete sentences using picture-vocabulary words.
  • Students will be able to independently create an "X is for Y" style sentence about a letter and picture of their own choosing.

How to Use This Resource

  • Review the word bank together and make sure students can read all eight pictured words.
  • Have students complete the four sentence frames in Part 1 independently or with light support.
  • For Part 2, have students choose any letter, draw a picture in the box, and complete the sentence frames about it.
  • Let a few volunteers share their Part 2 page with the class once finished.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Once finished, bind everyone's Part 2 pages together (in any order, or alphabetically by the chosen letter) into a simple class-made "Our ABC Book" to display or keep in the reading corner.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to copy a sentence frame directly from the word bank in Part 1, and accept a single word plus a drawing for Part 2.

Extension: ask students to write a second original sentence describing their Part 2 picture in more detail.

Assessment

Review completed sentences for correct use of the target vocabulary and the modeled "___ is for ___" sentence frame; this is a formative writing check rather than a scored quiz.

Teacher Tips

Have students say their Part 2 sentence out loud before writing it — rehearsing the sentence orally first reduces spelling and word-order errors for emerging writers, and helps confirm they've picked a word that genuinely starts with their chosen letter.
