What's in My School Bag? — Writing Activity

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to write simple, complete sentences about classroom objects using a or an correctly.
• Students will be able to write a sentence describing where an object is located.
• Students will be able to describe their own belongings in a short written sentence.

How to Use This Resource

• Review the word bank together and make sure students can read all ten words.
• Have students complete the four sentence frames in Part 1 independently or with light support.
• For Part 2, have students draw what is inside their own school bag in the box.
• Students then write 1-2 sentences about their drawing on the lines provided.

Classroom Activity Ideas

• Once finished, let a few volunteers share their Part 2 drawing and sentence with the class as a short "show and tell" about what's in their bag, giving the writing a real audience.

Differentiation

Support: allow students to copy a sentence frame directly from the word bank, or accept a single word plus a drawing in Part 2. Extension: ask students to write a second, original sentence explaining why that object is their favourite thing in their bag.

Assessment

Review completed sentences for correct use of a/an and the modeled sentence frames; this is a formative writing check rather than a scored quiz.

Teacher Tips

Encourage students to say their sentence out loud before writing it — rehearsing the sentence orally first reduces spelling and word-order errors for emerging writers, especially with the a/an choice.
