The Alphabet Book — Reading Passage & Comprehension

About This Resource

A three-page reading passage covering all 26 letters (one illustrated sentence pair per letter) plus a comprehension page with true/false, picture-choice, and number questions, with a full answer key.

Overview

"The Alphabet Book" is a Grade 1 passage built entirely from the unit's own picture vocabulary, giving every letter its own short, illustrated sentence pair (for example, "O is for octopus. An octopus has eight legs."). Because it uses the full alphabet, the passage runs across two pages before the comprehension questions on a third. The comprehension questions test specific details from the passage — beginning sounds, factual recall, and counting — rather than personal information, so every student answers the same questions regardless of background.

Grade 1 45-55 Minutes Reading

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to read simple sentences built from the unit's letter-sound vocabulary.
  • Students will be able to answer factual comprehension questions about a text they've read or heard.

How to Use This Resource

  • Read the passage aloud together as a class, or have students read it independently once most letters have been introduced.
  • Have students point to each word as they read, reinforcing print awareness alongside letter sounds.
  • Complete the comprehension page, answering true/false questions, circling pictures, and circling a number.
  • Grade using the included answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Turn a rereading of the passage into a call-and-response chant: the teacher reads the letter and word ("O is for octopus"), and the class echoes the descriptive sentence back ("An octopus has eight legs!").

Differentiation

Support: read the passage aloud to the whole class before independent comprehension work, and allow pointing to answers instead of circling.

Extension: ask students to write one new sentence of their own, in the same "___ is for ___" style, about a letter not detailed in the passage.

Assessment

Grade the comprehension page using the included answer key; use results to check both reading comprehension and recall of specific letter-sound facts taught across the unit.

Teacher Tips

Because the passage covers all 26 letters, it works well as a cumulative "victory lap" once most of the alphabet has been taught, rather than as an early-unit resource — consider saving it for the later weeks of the pacing plan in the Teacher's Guide.
